Simple Machines Forum Integration

An AI assistant that answers questions on your SMF board

Overview

The SMF modification puts an AI assistant on your board. A chat button sits in the corner of every page, visitors ask a question in their own words, and the answer comes from your own content: your website, your uploaded documents and your help centre articles.

AI disclaimer: Answers on your forum are generated by AI. They may sometimes be inaccurate or incomplete and should be verified before you rely on them, especially for important decisions.

How It Works

The modification adds one small script to every board page through an SMF integration hook, so no core file is edited. That script waits for the page to finish loading, then fetches the chat widget from Asyntai, so your board draws first and page speed is unchanged.

Requirements

  • An Asyntai account. The free plan is enough to start.
  • A Simple Machines Forum board, version 2.1 or newer.
  • Administrator access to that forum.

Installation

Follow these steps to add Asyntai to your SMF board:

Install the package

In the Administration Center, open Package Manager, select Add Packages, and upload the Asyntai zip. Then select Install Mod. The package manager adds the files and the hooks for you.

Open the settings

Go to Configuration, then Modification Settings, and open the Asyntai AI Chatbot tab.

Paste your widget ID

Paste your widget ID and select Save. You find the ID in your Asyntai Dashboard under Setup & Integration. You can paste the whole snippet; the modification keeps only the ID.

Open your board

That's it — the chat button appears in the corner of every board page. The chat is off while the widget ID field is empty, so you can switch it off at any time by clearing that field.

Tip: Point the AI at your forum rules, FAQs, and help articles from your Asyntai Dashboard so it answers questions specific to your community.

Settings

  • Asyntai widget ID: the chat is on while this holds a valid ID, and off when it is empty.
  • Show the chat only to guests: members who are signed in never see the chat. Useful when the assistant is there to help newcomers rather than regulars.
  • Script address: leave this as it is unless you host the widget yourself.

  • Stay open while the visitor moves between categories and topics
  • Use your own uploaded docs, FAQs, and instructions to give accurate answers

Themes

The chat is added through an integration hook, not through a theme file, so it works with every SMF theme, including custom ones.

Plans & Pricing

The Simple Machines Forum integration is available on all Asyntai plans, including Free. Each plan includes a monthly message allowance shared across all your channels and integrations. View pricing.

Uninstalling

Clear the widget ID field to switch the chat off, or uninstall the package in the Package Manager. The chat disappears from your board straight away, and the package removes its files and settings.
