Overview
Normally your chatbot saves each question and answer so you can read the conversation later. With Zero Retention Mode on, it stops doing that. The chatbot still answers exactly as before, but nothing a visitor types is written to our database.
How It Works
- The conversation lives in the visitor's browser - not on our servers
- Each question is answered and then forgotten - the message is used to build the reply and then discarded
- Closing the tab ends it - nobody can read it back afterwards, including you
- Every website is separate - you can run one site this way and leave another as it is

Turning It On
- Open the Zero Retention Mode page from your dashboard sidebar
- Switch it on for the website you want
- Decide whether to keep anonymous usage statistics (see below)
The change takes effect on the next message. There is nothing to install and no change to your widget code.
Anonymous Usage Statistics
There is a second switch underneath, on by default. Leaving it on records the time, page and device of each chat — but never the messages themselves — so your analytics keep working. Turn it off and nothing is written at all.
Statistics on (default)
- No questions or answers
- No IP address
- Time, page and device
- Analytics keep working
Statistics off
- No questions or answers
- No IP address
- No record of the chat at all
- Analytics show nothing
What Stops Working
Several features read your conversations, so they have nothing to work with in this mode:
- Chat logs - there are no conversations to open
- Knowledge gaps - these are found by analysing message text
- Human takeover and live monitoring - an agent cannot join a conversation they cannot see
- Daily reports and AI notifications - both summarise what was said
What Keeps Working
- Your chatbot - answers are unchanged, including follow-up questions
- Knowledge base, AI instructions and custom tools - all unchanged
- Message limits and billing - usage is counted as normal
- Lead capture - see the note below
Leads and webhooks are not affected.
If you collect email addresses or phone numbers, those are still saved to your Leads page. If you have a webhook set up, messages are still sent to your own endpoint. Turning off anonymous statistics stops lead capture as well.
Turning It Off
Switch it off and conversations are saved again from the next message onwards. Anything that went unrecorded while it was on cannot be recovered — it was never written anywhere.
Note: Zero Retention Mode is part of an Enterprise agreement. Email [email protected] and we will walk you through it.
