Add the Asyntai AI chat to every page of your Elgg community
Overview
Elgg is an open source platform for social networks and communities. The Asyntai plugin puts the AI chat on every page of your site.
Asyntai reads your public pages and answers your visitors day and night, in more than 80 languages. New visitors get an answer about how to join, what the community is for, and how the site works, before anybody on your team reads a message.
How It Works
The plugin adds the Asyntai chat script to the page footer. Every theme gets the chat, because the footer is part of every Elgg page.
Asyntai answers from your own content. Your knowledge base is built in the Asyntai dashboard: it crawls your site, and you can add files, pages and questions of your own.
A switch in the plugin settings shows the chat to guests only. Use it when the chat is there to win new members, and your members use the forums instead.
Requirements
- Elgg 6.1 or later. Tested on 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.0 and 7.1.
- PHP 8.2 or later
- An Asyntai account. The free plan is enough to start.
- Administrator rights on your Elgg site
Installation
Follow these steps to add Asyntai to Elgg:
Get Your Widget ID
Sign in to Asyntai and open Add to Your Website. Copy the widget ID, for example asyntai_ab12cd34. You can also copy the whole snippet.
Upload the Plugin
Unpack the archive into the mod directory of your site, so that the files are in mod/asyntai.
Activate It
Open Administration → Plugins, find Asyntai AI Chatbot, and press Activate.
Paste the Widget ID
Open Administration → Configure → Plugin settings → Asyntai AI Chatbot. Paste the widget ID and press Save. The chat appears at once on every page.
Settings
- Widget ID — the identifier from your Asyntai dashboard. You can paste the whole snippet and the ID is read out of it. An empty field switches the chat off.
- Show the chat to guests only — members who are logged in do not see the chat.
- Widget script address — change this only if Asyntai support asks you to.
Tip: Your community answers better questions when Asyntai knows more. Open Knowledge Base in the Asyntai dashboard and add your rules, your welcome guide and your frequent questions.
Removing It
Open Administration → Plugins and press Deactivate. The chat disappears from every page at once. Your settings stay, so the chat comes back with the same widget ID when you activate the plugin again.
