AI voice agent for Twilio numbers

A Twilio AI voice agent you connect, not one you build

You have a Twilio account, or you are about to open one. Asyntai puts an AI voice agent on its numbers without a line of code. Paste your Account SID and Auth Token on the Phone Calls page, press Import next to a number, and the next call to it is answered from your website, your documents and your rules.

What each action on the Phone Calls page does in Twilio

Asyntai works through your Twilio credentials and the voice webhook of the numbers you pick. Here is the effect of each action, so you know what to expect before you press anything.

Connect: Account SID and Auth Token

Both values are on the home page of the Twilio Console. When you press Connect, Asyntai checks them with Twilio and then lists every voice-capable number on the account. If you rotate the Auth Token later, connect again with the new one.

Import: the voice webhook is set for you

Press Import next to a number and Asyntai sets that number's voice webhook on Twilio. From the next call on, callers reach the agent. You write no call handler and edit nothing on the number by hand. The number stays on your Twilio invoice.

Transfer: an ordinary outgoing call

Each imported number can have a transfer number in international format, with + and the country code. When a caller asks for a person during your Escalate to Human hours, the call goes there. Twilio bills that leg as a normal outgoing call, and the phone that rings shows the caller's own number.

Switch off, remove or disconnect

A switched-off number stays imported, and calls to it are declined with a short message. Remove a number and Asyntai clears its voice webhook, so you can point it at something else. Disconnect the account and every imported number is released.

What the caller hears

Twilio carries the call. Your content supplies the answers.

Nothing about the answers lives in Twilio. The agent speaks from your Asyntai knowledge base and follows your AI Instructions, the same material that powers your website chat.

  • Your website, page by pageAsyntai reads the pages of your site. When a page changes, have Asyntai read it again, and the agent uses the new version.
  • Documents and pasted textRate cards, terms, access times for each site. A new upload is used from the next call.
  • Custom Tools for live dataIf your own system has an API, the agent can look up live data during the call, for example the status of a customer's account. Standard plan and higher.

The call path

From the ring on your Twilio number to the transcript

Callers dial your Twilio number exactly as before. Once a call to an imported number reaches Asyntai, the order of events is always the same.

  • AI disclosure, then your greetingThe agent says it is an AI assistant and then says the greeting from the Voice Agent page. The caller talks normally, hears a reply within a second or two, and can cut in at any time.
  • Parallel calls up to your plan's limitStandard takes 5 calls at the same time and Pro takes 10. Above that, the next caller hears that the lines are busy and is asked to try again in a few minutes.
  • Voice minutes on the Asyntai sideStandard includes 200 a month and Pro includes 1,500. When the month's minutes are used up, calls are declined with a short message until they reset. Twilio's per-minute charges are separate.

Requirements and setup

What you need on the Twilio side, then four steps

An Asyntai Standard plan or higher. An upgraded Twilio account, because a trial account cannot be used. At least one voice-capable number on it, and the Account SID and Auth Token. Twilio may ask for business verification before you can buy a number, so start that part early.

  1. Add your website in Asyntai and upload the documents the agent should use. The pages are read in a few minutes.
  2. On the Voice Agent page, write the greeting and make a free test call in the browser. No Twilio number is needed for this test.
  3. On the Phone Calls page, paste the Account SID and Auth Token and press Connect. Then press Import next to each number the agent should answer.
  4. Enter a transfer number for each line, turn on Escalate to Human and set its hours. Call the number from another phone and ask for a person.

FAQ

Twilio AI voice agent: questions from Twilio users

Practical details for people who know their way around the Twilio Console.

Do I write code or run a server for this?

No. Asyntai is the service your calls reach. You paste two values, press Import, and Asyntai sets the voice webhook. Everything the agent does is set in the dashboard: the greeting on the Voice Agent page, the rules in the AI Instructions, the transfer number next to each imported number, and the hours under Escalation.

Can I connect a Twilio trial account?

Connect an upgraded Twilio account; a trial account cannot be used. Twilio may also ask for business verification before you buy a number. When the verified account has a voice-capable number, it appears on the Phone Calls page and you can import it.

Where are the Account SID and Auth Token?

On the home page of the Twilio Console. Copy both into the Phone Calls page in Asyntai and press Connect. If you rotate the Auth Token in Twilio later, connect again with the new value.

What does Import change on my number?

It sets the number's voice webhook, so that incoming calls reach the Asyntai agent. The number itself stays in your Twilio account and on your Twilio invoice. To undo it, remove the number in Asyntai and its voice webhook is cleared.

Can I keep using the same Twilio account for my own projects?

Yes. The agent answers the numbers you import. Your other numbers are listed on the Phone Calls page, and you decide whether to import them. When you want a number back for another use, remove it in Asyntai and configure it in Twilio as you like.

How do transfers work, and who pays for them?

Each imported number has its own transfer number field. During your Escalate to Human hours, a caller who asks for a person is put through to it, and the receiving phone shows the caller's own number. Twilio bills that leg as a normal outgoing call. If nobody answers within 20 seconds, or the line is busy, the caller returns to the agent, which apologizes and takes a callback request.

Can it work as a Twilio AI receptionist for a small office?

Yes. Write a greeting that names your office, add the office line as the transfer number, and set your hours under Escalation. Inside those hours, callers who ask for a person are put through. Outside them, the agent takes the caller's name and callback number, repeats the digits for the caller to confirm, and emails the request to your escalation address.

What will a month cost in total?

Your Asyntai plan, Standard at $139 or Pro at $449 a month, plus Twilio's charges for the numbers, the call minutes and any transfers. Twilio lists its rates on the voice pricing page. The plan finder helps you choose between Standard and Pro.

Build a Twilio AI voice agent yourself, or connect one

A Twilio AI voice agent starts with what Twilio provides: phone numbers, a web console, APIs and usage-based charges for call minutes. That is the telephone side of the job. The part that listens to a caller, understands the question and gives a correct answer is not in the box. You can build that part on top of Twilio, or you can connect an agent that already exists. This page is about the second route, written for someone who will open the Twilio Console in another tab while reading.

It helps to be clear about what a build involves. You write and host the service that the number's voice webhook points to. You connect speech recognition, a language model and speech synthesis, and you keep the delay between them short enough for a natural conversation. You add a way for the model to find answers in your own documents instead of guessing. You handle a caller who talks over the reply, you write the transfer logic, and you decide what happens when nobody picks up. Each of these parts is documented and a developer can build them. After launch, someone also has to run the service and keep it up to date.

Connecting Asyntai replaces all of that with a form. On the Phone Calls page you paste the Account SID and Auth Token from the home page of the Twilio Console and press Connect. Asyntai checks the values with Twilio and lists the voice-capable numbers on your account. Press Import next to a number, and Asyntai sets that number's voice webhook. The next call to it reaches the agent. There is no handler to write, no server to host and no number to edit by hand. If you rotate the Auth Token, you connect again with the new one.

On the call itself, the agent first says that it is an AI assistant, and then says the greeting you wrote on the Voice Agent page. After that, the caller simply talks. The reply comes within a second or two, and the caller can interrupt the agent whenever they like. The answers come from your Asyntai knowledge base: your website, read page by page, the PDF files and text you upload, and the AI Instructions you write in plain English. The agent does not invent prices or policies. When a question is not covered, it offers a callback request. If your own system has an API, Custom Tools let the agent fetch live data during the call, such as the state of an account, on the Standard plan and higher.

A Twilio AI receptionist also needs a clear way to reach a person. Every imported number has a field called Transfer to a person, which takes an office line or a mobile in international format. Transfers need Escalate to Human to be on, and they happen only during its business hours. When a caller asks for a person, the agent says it is putting them through, and Twilio places the transfer as a normal outgoing call on your account. The phone that rings shows the caller's own number. If nobody answers within 20 seconds, or the line is busy, the caller comes back to the agent, which apologizes and takes a callback request. Outside your hours, a callback request is the route: the agent asks for a name and a number, repeats the digits one by one, waits for the caller to confirm them, and sends the request to your escalation email. If you leave the transfer field empty, the agent always takes a callback request.

The requirements are short. You need an Asyntai plan at Standard or above, and an upgraded Twilio account with at least one voice-capable number, because a trial account cannot be used. Twilio may ask for business verification before you can buy a number, and that check runs on Twilio's timetable, so start it early. Twilio bills you for the numbers and the call minutes; its current rates are on the Twilio voice pricing page. Asyntai bills the plan. Standard costs $139 a month and includes 200 voice minutes and 5 calls at the same time. Pro costs $449 a month and includes 1,500 voice minutes and 10 calls at the same time. Each answer on a call also counts as one AI reply on the plan. When every line is in use, a new caller hears that the lines are busy. When the month's minutes are used up, calls are declined with a short message until the minutes reset. For more minutes than Pro includes, write to [email protected].

You stay in control of each number. Switch a number off and calls to it are declined with a short message, while the import stays in place for later. Remove it and Asyntai clears the voice webhook, so you can use the number for something else in Twilio. Disconnect the whole account and every imported number is released. If the number your customers know belongs to another provider, you can forward calls from it to the Twilio number, for example when nobody answers or after hours, with the call forwarding most phone providers offer. Or you can publish the Twilio number as the line.

Two more things come with the agent. Every call is stored as a conversation in your Asyntai dashboard, with the full transcript, and phone numbers or email addresses that callers give can be saved as leads when lead collection is on. The same agent can also add a voice button to the Asyntai chat widget on your website, so visitors can talk instead of type. It uses the same knowledge and the same minutes, and the transcript goes into the chat.

The best way to judge it is to hear it before you touch Twilio. Add your website, write a greeting, and make a free test call in the browser from the Voice Agent page. When the answers are right, connect the account and import one number. The Twilio voice setup guide shows each screen, including the transfer settings.
