Setup

Adding it to a Just the Docs site

Just the Docs has a custom include for the head. HTML in that file goes before the closing head tag on every page.

Get the Asyntai snippet

Make a free Asyntai account, add the URL of your docs site and copy the snippet.

Open _includes

In your Jekyll site, open the _includes folder, or add one at the root.

Add head_custom.html

Paste the snippet in a file named head_custom.html in that folder.

Publish the site

Commit and push for GitHub Pages, or run bundle exec jekyll build and upload the result.

This works with the gem, the remote theme on GitHub Pages and a fork of the theme. Keep any code you already have in head_custom.html.

FAQ

Just the Docs questions

Includes, GitHub Pages, patrons and plans.

_includes/head_custom.html in your site. The theme inserts it before the closing head tag.

Does it work on GitHub Pages?

Yes. With remote_theme, your own _includes folder still overrides the theme file.

Yes. The theme adds head_custom.html to the head of each page it renders.

Does it replace the theme search?

No. Lunr search stays. Visitors can search for a word or ask a full question in the chat.

Guide

An AI assistant for Just the Docs sites

Why add an assistant to Just the Docs

Just the Docs gives Jekyll sites a clear sidebar, search and a clean layout.

Visitors still ask before they read. A chat meets them with the answer and the page that holds it.

Answers for everyday questions

Hours, accounts, rooms and e-books fill most of a library's calls.

Asyntai replies from your guides, so staff time goes to people who need more help.

Requests that need a person

Some questions need staff, such as account blocks or book purchases.

The chat takes the details and passes them on, with the full conversation.

Setup with head_custom.html

The theme reads _includes/head_custom.html and adds it before the closing head tag.

Put the snippet there, publish, and every page shows the chat button.

Better guides from real questions

The dashboard shows the topics people ask about.

Add a page or a clearer step where questions pile up.

Help every visitor of your Just the Docs site

One include file adds the chat to the whole site. 50 messages are free.

No card required to start.
