Setup

Adding it to Sphinx docs

Sphinx has an html_js_files setting in conf.py. It accepts a full URL and the attributes for the script tag.

Get your snippet

Sign up for Asyntai, add your docs address and copy your widget ID.

Open conf.py

Open conf.py in the source folder of your docs.

Add the entry

Add the widget URL and its attributes to html_js_files, as in the example.

Build and publish

Run your HTML build and publish the output. Then open your docs and click the chat button.

Replace YOUR_ID with the ID from your Asyntai snippet. If html_js_files already has entries, add this one to the same list.

FAQ

Sphinx questions

conf.py, themes, versions and costs.

Where do I add the script in Sphinx?

Add the widget URL with its attributes to html_js_files in conf.py. The example above shows the format.

Does it show on every page?

Yes. Sphinx adds files from html_js_files to all HTML pages it builds.

Does it work with Read the Docs?

Yes. Read the Docs runs your Sphinx build, so the conf.py entry is part of every build.

Which themes does it work with?

The chat is a separate button, so it works with the Read the Docs theme, Furo, PyData and others.

Does it read my API reference?

It reads your published HTML pages, autodoc pages included. Start a fresh crawl after a release.

Can it handle several versions?

Yes. Name the current version in the instructions, and it says which version an answer is for.

Can it collect support cases?

Yes. It saves the version, the problem and contact details with the conversation.

Can users ask in other languages?

Yes. Each reader gets the answer in the language they write in.

What does it cost?

Guide

An AI assistant for Sphinx documentation

Why Sphinx projects add an assistant

Sphinx builds large docs from reStructuredText or Markdown, often with an API reference from your code.

Large docs are hard to search when a user has an error, not a keyword. An assistant answers the actual question.

Answering setup and error questions

Connection steps, version pairs and error messages are the most common questions.

The assistant gives the right call and links to the page that explains it.

Help with hardware and firmware

Hardware SDKs add one more layer: firmware versions and safety rules.

The assistant answers from your release notes and safety pages and sends flight issues to your team.

Setup with html_js_files

Sphinx adds every entry in html_js_files to each HTML page it builds. The entry takes a full URL and script attributes.

Add one entry, rebuild, and the chat appears on all pages.

Learning from questions

Every chat is saved. You see which topics users ask about most.

Use that list to add examples where they help most.
