Setup with the Hono middleware

Asyntai has a free Hono middleware on npm. You add one line before your routes, and the chat shows on every HTML page. Four steps, five minutes.

Copy your widget ID

Sign in to Asyntai and open the Install page. Your widget ID is the data-asyntai-id value in the snippet. It starts with asyntai_.

Install the package

Run npm install hono-ai-chatbot. With Bun, use bun add hono-ai-chatbot. With Deno, import it as npm:hono-ai-chatbot.

Add the middleware

Before your routes, add app.use('*', aiChatbot({ widgetId: 'YOUR_ID' })). Use the '*' path, because on Hono 3 a call without a path covers only some routes.

Deploy, and you're live

Start or deploy your app as usual. Open a page, and the chat bubble is in the corner.

Your app must return HTML pages, for example with c.html(), hono/jsx or static files. A missing or wrong widgetId stops the app at start-up, with a message that tells you how to fix it.

Do I need to edit my JSX layout?

No. The middleware adds the chat to every HTML page. If you want to place the tag yourself, the docs show how to do that.

Which versions and runtimes does it support?

The middleware works with Hono 3 and 4, on every runtime that Hono supports: Node.js 18 or newer, Bun, Deno, Cloudflare Workers, Vercel and Netlify.

Will it slow down my app?

No. The chat script loads asynchronously in the browser, after the page is shown. It is not part of your bundle.

Does it work on an API with no HTML pages?

The middleware needs HTML pages, for example from c.html(), hono/jsx or static files. If your frontend is a separate app, add the chat to that frontend. See our pages for React and Vue.js.

Can I keep it off my admin pages?

Yes. Give the skip option a function that gets the context, and return true for the pages that must not show the chat, for example paths that start with /admin.

Can I show it on one part of the site only?

Yes. Use a narrower path, for example app.use('/shop/*', ...), and the chat shows only under that path.

Does it answer visitors who speak another language?

Yes. The chatbot detects the visitor's language and replies in it, even if your Hono site is only in English.

Can I use it on several sites?

Yes. Each site has its own setup and knowledge base. The Free plan covers 1 site, Starter 2, Standard 3 and Pro up to 20 sites.
