"Chat plugin" means six different things depending on what your site runs on. On WordPress it is a real plugin. On Shopify it is an app. On Squarespace it is a code snippet, and only if you are on the Business plan or above. On Magento it is a paid extension.
The chat service behind all of them is usually the same product at the same price. What changes is how you install it, what it costs to be allowed to, and what breaks afterwards.
Most guides pick a platform and ignore the rest, which is unhelpful if you are choosing a chat tool that has to work across a site you may migrate later. This page covers the install path on each platform, the prices, and the four things that go wrong regardless of which one you are on.
What "plugin" means on your platform
| Platform | What you install | Cost to be allowed | Asyntai install | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | A real plugin | $0 | Script tag or plugin, free plan | Free directory, three clicks. The plugin is a connector; the service behind it bills monthly. |
| Shopify | An app | $0 to install | Script tag, free plan | App Store, billed through your Shopify invoice. Shopify Inbox is free on every plan. |
| Squarespace | A code snippet | $7 to $11 a month more | Code Injection, free plan | Code Injection is Business plan and above. Personal cannot install a chat widget at all. |
| Wix | An app or custom code | Varies by plan | Script tag, free plan | App market, plus custom code on paid plans. Check your plan allows custom code first. |
| Magento | A paid extension | $49 to $349, one time | Script tag, no extension to buy | Plus surcharges: Adobe Commerce edition, Hyvä theme, GraphQL, installation. |
| Anything else | A script tag | $0 | Script tag, free plan | Paste into your template before the closing body tag, or use a tag manager. |
The Asyntai column is ours, so read it as a disclosure. It is nearly identical on every row because the product is a script tag: no plugin to keep updated, no app charge, no Magento extension to buy, and no rebuild when you change platform. The one row where it does not help is Squarespace, where the Business plan requirement is Squarespace's rule and applies to every chat tool equally.
The last row is the honest general case. Every chat widget in this market is a JavaScript snippet underneath. Plugins, apps and extensions are convenience wrappers around pasting that snippet in the right place.
There is no such thing as a chat plugin, really. There is a script tag and six ways of putting it on a page.
What the chat service costs
The install method changes by platform. The subscription usually does not, so compare these once and apply the answer wherever your site lives.
| Service | Bills by | Published price | Free tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| tawk.to | Branding | $0, or $19 per month | Free forever with their branding on your widget. |
| Tidio | Conversation | $0 / $24.17 / from $49.17 | 50, 100 and 250+ billable conversations a month. |
| Crisp | Workspace | $0 / $45 / $95 / $295 | 2 seats and 100 contact profiles free. Flat per workspace above that. |
| LiveChat | Agent | $19 / $49 / $79 per person | None. Trial only. Annual billing rates shown. |
| Olark | Seat | $29 per agent | None. The AI plan is $400 a month billed annually. |
| Asyntai | Message | $0 / $39 / $139 / $449 | 100, 2,500, 15,000 and 50,000 messages a month. |
We make Asyntai, so read that row as a disclosure. It installs as a script tag, which means the same install on every platform in the table above and no Magento extension purchase.
The install path, platform by platform
WordPress
Plugins, Add New, search, Install, Activate. Then connect the plugin to your account with the chat service. Two things to do that people skip: take a backup first, and check four page types on the live site straight afterwards, not just the homepage.
The specific WordPress risk is plugin conflict. Chat widgets collide with cookie banners, sticky headers and page builders, all of which want the same corner of the screen. Check the plugin's last update date before installing, because abandoned plugins are a security problem rather than merely a dead feature.
Shopify
Install from the App Store, and the charge appears on your Shopify invoice rather than as a separate card payment. That makes app costs unusually easy to forget, so read your Shopify bill line by line once a quarter.
Try Shopify Inbox first. It is free on every plan and does AI instant answers and suggested replies. Two weeks with it will tell you what you actually need to buy, if anything.
Squarespace
Settings, Advanced, Code Injection, Footer. Save, then check the published site in a private window rather than the editor, because Code Injection does not run inside the Squarespace editor and this is the single most common false alarm.
Check your plan first. Code Injection is on Business and Commerce plans, not Personal. If you are on Personal, adding chat means upgrading, which is $7 a month more on annual billing and $11 more on monthly.
Magento
Buy the extension, install it, configure it, then subscribe to the chat service separately. The extension is the small number: $49 to $349 once, against a subscription that runs for years. Watch the surcharges, which commonly include the Adobe Commerce edition, the Hyvä theme and GraphQL for headless storefronts.
Anything else
Paste the script into your template before the closing body tag, or add it through a tag manager. If you use a tag manager, you gain the ability to turn the widget off, or restrict it to certain pages, without a developer. That is worth more than it sounds the first time you need to hide chat from a checkout step.
One script, every platform
Asyntai installs the same way everywhere: a script tag, or your tag manager. It reads the pages your site already has and answers visitors from them, at any hour and in their own language.
Try it on your websiteFour things that go wrong on every platform
1. It covers a button on mobile
The bottom right corner is contested territory: your chat bubble, your cookie banner, a back to top button, and on a store, the add to cart or checkout button on some themes. Open your own site on a phone after installing and look at the pages where somebody spends money.
Most chat tools let you set an offset or move the bubble. Do that rather than living with it, and consider hiding the widget on checkout pages entirely unless you have tested that it helps there.
2. It slows the page down
Chat widgets are among the heaviest third-party scripts a site loads. Measure a real page on mobile before you install and again after, and write both numbers down. That is the only chance you get to know the cost, and no vendor publishes it.
Two mitigations: load the script in the footer rather than the header, and check whether your caching layer needs to exclude it.
3. Nobody is there
The most common failure is not technical. A widget that shows "we are away" during half your traffic reads worse than no widget at all, because it advertises that you are not answering.
Look at your analytics and find when visitors actually arrive. If a meaningful share come in the evening or at weekends, decide deliberately: either staff those hours, or use something that answers without a person, or set the widget to hide outside your hours so it is not visibly absent.
4. It sets cookies you have not declared
If you serve visitors in the EU or UK, a chat widget almost certainly sets cookies and processes personal data. Ask the vendor which cookies, for what purpose, and whether the widget still loads when someone declines non-essential cookies. Your cookie notice needs those answers and they are rarely on the pricing page.
Choosing without regretting it
Two decisions matter more than the brand, and both are easy to get wrong.
Decide the meter first
- Per agent suits few chats and several staff.
- Per conversation suits low, predictable volume.
- Per workspace suits several staff and steady volume.
- Per message suits high volume with nobody staffing it.
Then decide the hours
- Staffed working hours only, and hide it otherwise.
- Staffed with an automated first line outside hours.
- Automated first line always, humans on escalation.
- Whatever you choose, test it at 9pm on a Saturday.
Get those two right and the brand matters far less than the comparison articles suggest. Get them wrong and you will be doing this again in six months, on a different platform, having learned nothing.
Free chat plugins, and what free means
"Free chat plugin" returns hundreds of results and they are free in four different ways. Knowing which kind you have prevents an unpleasant month two.
| Kind of free | Example | What it costs you | Ends when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free with branding | tawk.to | Their advert on your site | Never, unless you pay $19 to remove it. |
| Free tier with a cap | Crisp, Tidio, Asyntai | Nothing until the cap | At 100 profiles, 50 conversations or 100 messages. |
| Free plugin, paid service | Most WordPress plugins | The subscription behind it | Immediately. The plugin was never the product. |
| Free trial | LiveChat, Olark, Zendesk | Nothing for 14 days | On a date, whether you are ready or not. |
The third row is the one that surprises people. A plugin listed as free in the WordPress directory is usually a connector: it installs at no cost and does nothing until you create a paid account with the service behind it. That is not deceptive, but it does mean the directory's price tag tells you nothing about what the thing costs.
The second row is the one to choose carefully. A cap on contacts or conversations ends quietly, during a busy week, when visitors simply stop being served and nobody tells you. Pick the cap you can live inside for a year.
Chat plugin or chat widget or chat integration?
These three phrases get used interchangeably and there is a small but useful distinction underneath.
- The widget is the thing your visitor sees: the bubble, the window, the greeting. Every product here has one and they look nearly identical.
- The plugin, app or extension is the wrapper that puts the widget on your platform. It is convenience, not capability.
- The integration is what the service connects to behind the scenes: your CRM, your help desk, your order system, your calendar.
People compare widgets, which all look the same, and skip integrations, which are where products actually differ. If you take one thing from this page, invert that: assume the widget is fine and spend your evaluation time on what happens to a conversation after it ends.
Five checks before you install
- Does my platform plan allow it? Squarespace Personal and some Wix plans do not. Check before you compare widgets.
- What is metered, and what does the next tier cost? Conversations, seats, messages and resolutions are all in use. Price triple your current volume.
- Can I move it or hide it per page? You will want to hide it on checkout, and to move it away from your cookie banner.
- What does it do to mobile page speed? Measure it yourself. Nobody publishes this.
- How do I remove it completely? Test the uninstall during the trial. Orphaned scripts from removed tools are common and they cost you speed for years.
What to do next
- Check your platform's constraint first. On Squarespace and Wix that is your plan. On Magento it is your edition and theme. On WordPress and Shopify there is no constraint, only the subscription behind the plugin.
- Try the free option on your platform. Shopify Inbox if you are on Shopify, tawk.to or a free tier anywhere else. It establishes a baseline before you spend anything.
- Install at a quiet hour and check four page types. Home, a content page, a product or service page, and the contact or checkout page, on a phone as well as a laptop.
- Answer the hours question honestly. It determines more about whether this works than any feature on any comparison table.
