AI search for Joomla that answers what your visitors mean

Joomla's Smart Search matches the words a visitor types against an index of the words in your articles. If the visitor uses different words, they get nothing. Asyntai's AI Search Bar reads the meaning behind the question. Someone types "how do I wash a jacket" and the bar finds the article that answers it, even though the title says nothing about washing. One extension package puts the bar in place of your template's search box, or in any module position you choose. No API key, no code, and no developer.

Beyond the Smart Search index

Visitors ask in their own words, and the bar finds the right page

Joomla ships with Smart Search, a word index built from your articles. It is a solid keyword engine, and it does exactly what a keyword engine does: it finds pages that contain the words the visitor typed. The problem is that visitors rarely type the words you wrote. They describe a situation, a symptom, or a goal. They ask "my order has not arrived," not "shipping delays." They ask "can I bring a dog," not "pet policy." Smart Search answers those queries with an empty page, and the visitor concludes the answer is not on your site. The Asyntai AI Search Bar reads the whole question, works out what the visitor is trying to do, and returns the articles and pages that actually answer it. Results appear under the bar as the visitor types, each one a real link to a real page on your site.

  • Meaning, not matchingA visitor asks "how do I wash a jacket" and the bar returns your care guide, even though the article is called "Looking after technical outerwear." The words do not overlap. The meaning does. This is the single biggest difference between the bar and the index Joomla builds for Smart Search, and it is what turns an empty result page into an answer.
  • Results while the visitor typesResults appear under the bar as the question is typed, as a short ranked list with a title and a line of context. The visitor picks one and lands on the page. Arrow keys move through the list, Enter opens the highlighted result. Nothing loads a separate results page and nothing sends the visitor away from where they were.
  • We read your site ourselvesYou do not build or maintain an index. We read your articles, category pages, and any other published pages on your site, and we keep reading them as you publish. There is no indexer to schedule, no content plugin to configure, and no index to rebuild after a bulk edit.

One package installs a plugin and a module, and you choose where the bar goes

The Asyntai extension is a single package that installs two things at once: a system plugin that connects your account and puts the bar on your site, and a module so you can place the bar in any template position. The plugin is switched on for you when the package installs. Then you make one decision. Either the bar takes the place of the search box your template already shows, or it appears only where you publish the module. Both paths leave your template files untouched. Your visitors keep the search they already know, and the search starts answering questions it could not answer before.

  • It takes the place of your template's search boxChoose "In place of my template search box" and the bar finds the search box your template already shows, hides it, and sits in exactly the same spot. Your template's own styling and layout keep working. If a visitor presses Enter without picking a result, your usual Joomla search page still opens, so the route they already know still works.
  • Or a module position you pickCassiopeia, the template a new Joomla site starts on, shows no search box at all. On a site like that, publish the Asyntai AI Search module in a template position instead, for example the search position in Cassiopeia. Your template styles the module, so the bar sits in the layout like anything else you publish there.
  • Your search box always worksThe bar runs on every plan, including the free one. Searches and chat replies share your monthly allowance. If the allowance runs out, the bar removes itself and your template's own search box comes straight back, then the bar returns by itself when the allowance resets. Your visitors are never left typing into a box that answers nothing.

Not one of these titles contains the words the visitor typed. That is the difference between matching words and reading meaning.

AI search for Joomla — FAQs

Common questions from Joomla site owners, administrators, and agencies looking at AI-powered site search.

How is this different from Joomla's Smart Search?

Smart Search builds an index of the words in your articles and returns the pages that contain the words a visitor typed. It works well when the visitor already knows your vocabulary. The Asyntai AI Search Bar works on meaning instead. It reads the whole question, works out what the visitor is trying to do, and returns the pages that answer it, even when the visitor's words and your words do not overlap. A visitor asking "how do I wash a jacket" finds your care guide called "Looking after technical outerwear". Smart Search finds nothing for that query, because none of those words are in the article.

Do I have to remove Smart Search?

No, and you should not. The bar sits on top of what you already run. If a visitor presses Enter without picking one of the results, your usual Joomla search page opens exactly as before. Visitors who already know how your search works keep that route. Visitors who describe what they want in a sentence get an answer instead of an empty page. Smart Search, the search module, and any menu item you have pointing at a search page all keep working.

What exactly does the package install?

One package installs two extensions at the same time. The first is a system plugin called System - Asyntai AI Search, which connects your account and puts the bar on your site. The second is a site module called Asyntai AI Search, which lets you place the bar in any template position. The plugin is enabled for you when the package installs, so after the upload you only need to press Connect Asyntai on the plugin screen.

Will it work with my template?

Yes, on both paths. If your template shows a search box, the bar finds that box, hides it, and takes exactly the same place, so your template's layout and styling continue to apply. If your template shows no search box, which is the case for Cassiopeia on a new Joomla site, publish the Asyntai AI Search module in a template position instead. Your template styles the module, so the bar sits in the layout like anything else you publish there. If the bar picks the wrong element on your template, fill in the Search box to replace setting with a CSS selector for the right one.

What does the bar actually search?

Your articles and pages, as we read them from your published site. Category pages, blog pages, and static content are all read the same way. If you run a shop built on Joomla, its product pages are read too, because they are pages on your site. You do not select content types, configure a content plugin, or run an indexer. We read the site and keep reading it as you publish.

Do I need an API key or any code?

No. There is no key to create, no snippet to paste, and no template file to edit. You press Connect Asyntai on the plugin screen and a window opens where you sign in or create a free account. The plugin talks to us directly, so your server does need to be able to make outgoing HTTPS requests. Most hosts allow this, and the plugin screen tells you plainly if yours does not.

What plan do I need?

A site connected through this extension runs the bar on any plan, including the free one. Your monthly reply allowance applies, and searches and chat replies share it. The plugin screen shows how much of the month is left. If the allowance runs out, the bar removes itself and your template's own search box comes back immediately, so visitors can still search. The plugin checks in the background and the bar returns by itself when your allowance resets.

Can I try the bar before my visitors see it?

Yes. The plugin screen has a Try your search bar button. It opens your real search bar, on your real content, in a new tab. Searches you run there do not count against your monthly allowance, so you can check the results on your own articles before you publish the module or switch the bar on for your template.

Can I have the chat assistant as well?

Yes. This extension adds the search bar only. Our separate Joomla chatbot plugin adds the chat assistant. The two run side by side on the same pages and share the same knowledge base, so anything the bar can find, the assistant can answer, and you only maintain one site in your Asyntai dashboard.

Why Joomla site search loses visitors, and what an AI search bar changes

Joomla sites accumulate content. That is the point of the platform. A Joomla install that has been running for five years holds hundreds of articles across dozens of categories, written by several people, edited over time, organised into a structure that made sense when it was built and has been extended ever since. The content is there. The visitor's answer is almost always somewhere in it. The problem is the distance between the question a visitor asks and the words that sit in your articles, and that distance is exactly what a keyword index cannot cross.

Joomla's Smart Search is a good keyword engine. It indexes your articles, contacts, categories and more through its content plugins, it supports stemming and filters, and it returns ranked results quickly. Every one of those strengths depends on one assumption: that the visitor will type words that appear in your content. That assumption holds for a visitor who already knows your site. It fails for everyone else. A first-time visitor does not know that you call it "technical outerwear". They call it a jacket. They do not know your returns article is titled "Order resolution procedure". They type "it arrived broken". Smart Search does what it was built to do, finds no overlap, and returns an empty page.

An empty search result is not a neutral outcome. It is a statement. It tells the visitor that the information they wanted is not on your site, which is usually false. They do not try a second phrasing. They do not browse your category tree looking for it. They leave, and on most sites nobody ever finds out, because a search that returns nothing produces no ticket, no email and no complaint. The only trace is a line in a search log that nobody reads, and a visitor who does not come back.

The Asyntai AI Search Bar replaces the matching step with an understanding step. When a visitor types a question, the bar does not look for those words in your articles. It works out what the question means, then finds the pages on your site that answer it. "How do I wash a jacket" and "Looking after technical outerwear" share no words at all, and the bar connects them, because it is reasoning about the subject rather than comparing strings. That single change turns a large class of failed searches into answers.

The behaviour visitors see is deliberately ordinary. They type into a search box in the place where your template has always had one. Results appear underneath as they type, each with a title and a line of context, and each one a real link to a real page on your site. Arrow keys move through the list and Enter opens the highlighted result. There is no chat window to open, no assistant to greet them, and no new interface to learn. The only thing that changed is that the box now finds things.

That is also why the extension leaves your existing search in place. If a visitor ignores the results and presses Enter, your normal Joomla search page opens, exactly as it did before the extension was installed. Your search menu item still works. Your search module still works. Smart Search keeps running. For a site with years of habit and internal links built around the existing search, this matters more than it sounds: nothing anybody already relies on has to be unpicked before the bar can be useful.

Installation reflects how Joomla administrators actually work. You upload one package through System, Install, Extensions, which installs a system plugin and a site module together. The plugin is enabled during install. You open it, press Connect Asyntai, and sign in or create a free account in the window that opens. There is no API key to generate and copy, no site ID to paste into a settings field, and no template file to edit. We read your site from the outside, so nothing about your content has to be exported, mapped or re-indexed to get started.

You then make one decision, and the extension is built around the fact that Joomla templates differ. If your template shows a search box, choose "In place of my template search box". The bar finds that box, hides it, and takes the same position, inheriting the surrounding layout. If your template shows no search box, choose "Only where I publish the module" and publish the Asyntai AI Search module in a template position. Cassiopeia, the template a new Joomla site starts on, falls into the second group, and the plugin screen says so plainly rather than leaving you to wonder why nothing appeared. If the automatic choice picks the wrong element on a custom template, one CSS selector in the Search box to replace field settles it.

The remaining settings are deliberately few, and every one of them can be left empty. Leave the placeholder text empty and each visitor sees it in their own language. Leave the accent colour empty and the bar uses the colour set in your Asyntai dashboard, so it matches the rest of your Asyntai setup without being configured twice. The extension is not trying to become another configuration screen to maintain. It is trying to make one box on your site work better.

Before you show the bar to anybody, the plugin screen has a Try your search bar button that opens your real bar, on your real content, in a new tab. Searches run there do not count against your monthly allowance. This is the honest way to judge whether the bar helps on your site specifically: not on a demo catalogue, but on your own articles, with the questions your own visitors actually ask. Type the three questions your support inbox receives most often and look at what comes back.

Plans work in a way that suits sites that are not shops. The bar runs on every plan, including the free one, so a small association site or a project blog can use it without a subscription decision. Searches and chat replies draw on the same monthly reply allowance, and the plugin screen shows how much of the month remains. If the allowance runs out, the bar removes itself and your template's own search box comes straight back, so visitors keep being able to search. The plugin checks in the background and the bar returns by itself when the allowance resets, with nothing to reinstall or re-enable.

The Joomla sites that gain most from this are the ones whose visitors describe situations rather than name topics. Membership organisations answering "can I bring a guest to the meeting". Schools and universities answering "what do I do if I miss an exam". Local government sites answering "my bin was not collected". Clubs, associations, publishers, and documentation sites, where the content is long-form text written by people who know the subject, using the vocabulary of people who know the subject. The visitor never has that vocabulary. That gap is where searches fail, and it is the gap the bar is built to close.

Adding the chat assistant later is a separate decision, not a rebuild. Our Joomla chatbot plugin installs alongside this extension, runs on the same pages, and shares the same knowledge base and the same site in your Asyntai dashboard. Anything the bar can find, the assistant can answer. Many sites start with the search bar, because it changes an existing part of the page rather than adding a new one, and add the assistant once they have seen what visitors are actually asking.

The search box on a Joomla site is one of the least examined parts of it. It was there when the template was installed, it has always returned something, and nobody checks what. The questions it fails are invisible, because a visitor who finds nothing makes no noise. Putting a bar in that same spot that answers what people mean, rather than matching what they typed, is a small change to the page and a large change to what your site is able to tell the people already on it.
